Rock Skills Intermediate

This is a 16 hour coourse divided over 3 day's and is all about becoming a confident top rope climber outside. It will cover setting up anchors for top and bottom rope systems


You will learn how to be a safe belayer, develop your climbing movement skills and learn how to remain safe and construct belays.

Pevious Climbing Experience Required:

  • Completion of Rock Skills Introduction


  • Logged 10 Routes on Walls or Outdoor Crags
  • Logged 10 belays for fellow climber

What does the Rock Skills Intermediate course cover

Background and Planning

Choosing a suitable venue, how to use guidebooks and mobile devices to find crags and routes, crag etiquette and the work of the mountaineering councils.


Climbing Skills

Warming up and injury avoidance, developing your movement skills and widening your repertoire of climbing moves.


Footwear and Equipment

Rock boot fit, selecting the right equipment for improved performance
and an introduction to climbing protection.


Technical Skills

Building anchors, ropework, belaying, holding falls, lowering,
seconding a route and personal abseiling.


Environmental Knowledge

The impact of climbers at the crag, ethics, access and environmental considerations.


Hazards and Emergency Procedures

Identifying hazards, managing risk when climbing, abseiling and bouldering, understanding common injuries, how to get help and the role of Mountain

By the end of a Rock Skills Intermediate course you can expect to:

  • Have covered the course content in a safe and enjoyable outdoor environment and classroom-style setting;
  • Have climbed outside for a good proportion of each day on an accessible crag; and
  • Participate safely in a climbing session.
  • Progression from this course could involve gaining further climbing experience with friends or through a climbing club.
  • Learn to Lead Sport or Learn to Lead Trad courses are the next step in the Rock Skills pathway.


MDay 1 Indoor 6 hours – Location Brighton Indoor Climbing


6 hours

  • Presentation, handouts for the course and what to expect
  • Artificial Anchor placement on an indoor artificial crack
  • Clipping and unclipping snap gates indoor top roping
  • Belay a lead climber
  • Second climbing techniques
  • Abseiling
  • Basic Climbing techniques
  • Basic Climbing Movement


Day's 2 & 3 Outdoor 10 hours – Location Harrison Rocks

  • Environment
  • Bolt inspection
  • Tree and root inspection (rotten/hollow etc)
  • Knots
    • Double Figure 8
    • Bowline
    • Half Hitch
    • Italian Hitch
    • Clove Hitch
  • Setup Natural and Artificial anchors appropriate to the Environment
    • Bolt anchors
    • Tree Anchors
    • Y Hangs
    • Use of slings
    • Stakes
    • Belay Anchors Top Rope & Bottom Rope
  • Use a top rope belay effectively
  • Climbing and movement

  • Activities are located at Harrison Rocks near Tunbridge Wells
  • Consent form required for all participants – Under 18’s require parental consent
  • Under 18's may require a responsible adult to attend
  • Booking Subject to availability
  • Maximum weight 16 stone for roped activities
  • Please bring any medication if required i.e inhaler e.t.c

All prices include Insurance, Fully Qualified, Experienced & CRB Checked Instructor, Equipment, and entrance/hire fees.
