Rock Skills Introduction

This is an 8 hour course divided over 2 day's providing an introduction to climbing outside on boulders and friendly crags. The focus will be on maximum climbing time, how to move on rock, finding balance and using feet. Basic ropework and belaying will also be included.


This course is your key to getting started! No previous experience of climbing is required to attend a Rock Skills Introduction course because the content of the course is aimed at complete beginners. If you do have some experience of climbing but aren’t confident about using the equipment required, finding the crags, locating the routes you want to do and how to stay safe on the crag then a Rock Skills Introduction course is an ideal way to learn.

What does the Rock Skills Introduction course cover?

Background and Planning

An awareness of the types of places you can climb in the UK, how to use guidebooks and mobile devices to find crags and routes, crag etiquette and the work  of the mountaineering councils.


Climbing Skills

Fundamental movement skills and climbing styles.


Footwear and Equipment

Footwear and equipment selection and how to use the kit you choose.


Technical Skills

Tying into a harness, belaying, spotting andhow to abseil. Environmental Knowledge. The impact of climbers at the crag, ethics, access and environmental considerations for climbers.


Hazards and Emergency Procedures

Identifying hazards, managing risk, understanding common injuries, how to get help and the role of Mountain Rescue and associated emergencyservices.

By the end of a Rock Skills Introduction course you can expect to:

  • Have covered the course content in a safe and enjoyable outdoor environment and classroom-style setting;
  • Have climbed outside for a good proportion of the day on an appropriate crag;
  • Be in a strong position to take a climbing wall belay test; and
  • Be ready to attend a Rock Skills Intermediate course.
  • Progression after this course could involve gaining further climbing experience with friends or through a climbing club.
  • A Rock Skills Intermediate course is the next step in the Rock Skills pathway.


Day 1 - Location Harrison Rocks

  • Presentation, handouts for the course and what is expected

    • Fit a harness and helmet
  • Safety awareness
    • Be aware of other climbers and surrounding
    • Connecting yourself and others to the rope for belaying

  • Learn & demonstrate the ability to use Personal Safety Equipment (PSE)
  • Knots
    • Figure 8
    • Re-threaded figure 8
    • Stopper knot
  • Use Bottom Rope Belay systems effectively
  • Climbing Techniques & Movement


Day 2 - Location Harrison Rocks


4 Hours

  • Connecting yourself and others with a re-threaded figure and stopper knot
  • Hold falls
  • Lower a climber
  • Climbing Techniques & Movement

Useful Information

  • From 12 years old
  • Maximum 6 climbers per instructor
  • Activities are located at Harrison Rocks near Tunbridge Wells
  • Consent form required for all participants – Under 18’s require parental consent
  • Under 18's may require a responsible adult to attend
  • Booking Subject to availability
  • Maximum weight 16 stone for roped activities
  • Please bring any medication if required i.e inhaler e.t.c

All prices include Insurance, Fully Qualified, Experienced & CRB Checked Instructor, Equipment, and entrance/hire fees.


All activities have been risk assessed and include Emergency Action and Operating Procedures. Extreme Ventures fully complies with regulating bodies including Health and Safety, National Governing Bodies and Adventure Activity Licensing Authority
